Battery storage, smart inverters and demand response have aligned to make solar energy increasingly attractive to building owners and utilities. Local research projects featuring grid-connected solar and battery storage in multifamily and commercial buildings have shed new light on how NYC can take advantage of technological developments to move toward a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient electric infrastructure. 
 
Keynote speaker: Del Allison (bio), SolarBridge Technologies: New Architecture in Solar.

Del Allison is a senior executive with SolarBridge Technologies (www.solarbridgetech.com) with over 30 years of experience in microelectronics, telecommunications and cutting edge solutions for the renewable energy sector. He has extensive domestic and international experience with major solar OEM’s, EPC’s and channel partners in the solar space. Mr. Allison has spoken at domestic and international forums on technology and trends in renewable energy as well as the American Electronics Association financial conference. Mr. Allison has served on boards in the United States, Canada and China and was formally a Vice President and senior executive at Lucent Microelectronics and Agere Systems.

  • Luke Clause (bio), Senior Project Manager, NYCEDC: Brooklyn Army Terminal solar + storage project.

Luke Clause is a Senior Project Manager for the Center for Economic Transformation, Clean Technology and Energy of the NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). He is a graduate of the Columbia University School of International Affairs and earned a BS in Environmental Studies and Political Science at Santa Clara University. The NYCEDC serves as New York City’s primary engine for economic development and job creation and works to enhance the city’s business sectors by identifying, analyzing and addressing challenges faced by industries. Luke will take us on a virtual tour of the groundbreaking Brooklyn Army Terminal solar + storage and grid demonstration project at the Brooklyn Army Terminal complex. The project combines 100kW of solar with a 700kWH battery bank, which can provide 100kW of power for 4 hours when called upon by ConEd’s Demand Response System.

  • Jeffrey Irvine (bio), DG Ombudsman, CUNY: DG and resiliency for Multi-families

Jeff Irvine is the Lead NYC Solar Ombudsman, Sustainable CUNY. Mr. Irvine works with partners and industries to reduce the non-hardware 'soft costs' of solar photovoltaics (PV) and make installing rooftop solar easier, faster, and less expensive for homeowners and businesses. He coordinates the efforts of six working groups for Sustainable CUNY's NYSolar Smart initiative under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Rooftop Solar Challenge II to lower solar soft costs across New York State. Mr. Irvine manages numerous projects under NYSolar Smart including a solarize campaign in Brooklyn, permit streamlining with the NYC Dept. of Buildings and FDNY, and creation of an interactive online solar guide. Prior to joining the Sustainable CUNY Team, Mr. Irvine interned for the NYC Mayor's Office of Long-term Planning and Sustainability, managing the Mayor's Carbon Challenge to universities and hospitals. He also previously worked as a NYSERDA Energy $mart Communities Coordinator. Mr. Irvine has an MPA in Environmental Science and Policy from Columbia University and a BS in Television, Radio and Film from Syracuse University.

  • Sean Maxwell (bio), Energy Consultant, Steven Winter Associates: City Lights-Battery storage for multi-families.

Sean Maxwell is an Energy Consultant at Steven Winter Associates, Inc., and has been working in multifamily buildings with Steven Winter Associates for more than six years. He has extensive experience in testing and evaluating buildings for better energy efficiency and performance.  One of his current research projects is studying the application of large-scale battery storage for multifamily buildings with the goals of reducing peak electric demand and improving building resiliency.
